The Zome system can be found in over 6,000 schools and institutions across the US. It is used from the elementary through the university level to help teach algebra, scale, number sense,
symmetry, proportion, geometry, DNA structure, trigonometry, and more.

In classrooms across the globe, teachers are
taking advantage of the unique benefits Zome brings to the study of math, art, science, and
technology. The high quality modeling of Zome makes it easier and more enjoyable for students to learn, and increases their capacity for abstract
reasoning through tactile and visual feedback.
Students have a better understanding of new
concepts, and find them more interesting.

18. Art & Design

Eye of the Camera

ART OF THE COMIC BOOK
Whether your student is an accomplished artist, or someone who is just
beginning to discover their visual talents, this class provides the perfect
environment to tell visual stories that compress laughter and lessons into a few images. Comics allow young people to create their own universe where possibilities are only limited by the imagination. Students learn comic book story structure, layout, and character development. Instructors will focus on the techniques needed to create a sense of realistic movement as well as
developing the sense of story.

EYE OF THE CAMERA – ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Art is observation. Nowhere is this truer than in the art of photography.
Students will trace the rich history of the development of photography, both as an art and as a technology. They will look at examples of great photographs to nurture their understanding of what makes a photograph truly captivating. Students will learn basic lighting, composition, and work on developing a
vocabulary for “reading” images, using both manual and digital cameras.

FIGURE DRAWING
This class provides a foundation in figure structure, anatomical drawing, and proportion while learning about line and tone. Students will begin with contour and gesture drawing, and learn about the interaction of form and content.
Instruction includes work with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink.

THE MAGIC AND HISTORY OF CHALK ART
Students will be exposed to the ancient history of murals and street painting, while actively learning the various principles of graphing, drawing and painting. Together with a professional street painter, they will each design and create their own street painting with pastel chalks. The sky’s the limit (or rather, the asphalt) in this class!

THE HARMONY OF ART & SCIENCE
How do science (producing knowledge and technology) and art (producing
revelations and sensations) harmonize with each other? What is the bridge that brings these two worlds together, allowing us to clearly see the art in the development of science and the science in the making of art? Beginning with brief lectures, classes proceed to activities designed to correlate the fields of art and science through times and history. Each class will focus on particular period within human history and introduce people prominent in both the
artistic and scientific fields.

ARCHITECTURAL ADVENTURES
This class uses an interdisciplinary approach to teach architecture, which
enhances history, language arts, and visual and communication arts. Students examine their own immediate environment and continue to explore
relationships between their personal human-made world and cultural roots. They will investigate types of buildings and styles of architecture found around them, focusing especially on the future development of the American home,
incorporating energy efficient and environmentally friendly methods of building. (*Technological Option: Students will use Google Sketch Up to design their own building.)

PHOTO JOURNALISM
This class covers the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of photojournalism. Students discover where their interests lie and learn how to market their skills and images. Students design a portfolio of their life events, and learn the tricks to grabbing an editor’s attention.

19. Computer & Technology

Lego Robotics

COMPUTER ANIMATION
Students will explore how to draw, paint, and create vector objects, and
techniques for animating. Students will learn tweening, creating buttons for interactivity, and incorporating sound.

POWER POINT PRESENTS!

Attention will be given to articulation, projection and stage presence, while effectively using power point to enhance their presentation.

NAVIGATING YOUR PASSION
Students will have a chance to study their individual passion in this inter-
personal, student-centered activity class. Taking a subject that most
fascinates, students will research various search engines to deepen their
understanding of the material. Focusing on their topic, they will develop fine points of their project, and take that project through a web-site presentation report to an actual project creation (photographs, video, 3-D structure,
interviews, etc.) This class allows GATE students to explore projects with
individual depth and complexity, creating an intra-personal forum for students to share with others.

Alice- A design wonderland
Tumble down the rabbit hole and discover a world as boundless as your imagination. In this computer designclass students will create original 3D animations, story outlines and original game designs to bring their imaginings to life. Using 3D graphics and a drag-and-drop interface, Alice facilitates an engaging first programming experience; in which students are able to create interactive game platforms for game play and to share on the web.

REALITY CHECK! (Media Literacy)
For students who wonder “Why don’t I look like those people in the
magazines?” this photo-computer class will give them a behind-the-scenes view of the creation of image and advertising in the global media market.
Digital effects such as air-brushing will be identified, and students will work with their own image and the images of others to demystify the “perfect” images shown in magazines, films, and other forms of media. This class focuses both on digital photography and more importantly, a sociological examination of self and others.

LEGO ROBOTICS
Students will design and program a robot, using Lego’s Mindstorm Kit. The
robots will be challenged to perform specific tasks, such as picking up an
object, following a path OR tug-o-war. Give your young engineer a leg up in the world of computer technology and focus on the 8 essential skills of Legos – Concentration, Communication, Perseverance, Socialization, Planning &
Organizing, Design, Creative Problem Solving, and Independent Thinking.

GAME DESIGN
Do you spend your hours gaming on the computer? Is your brain bursting with ideas for your own virtual world, populated with fantastic creatures and heroic challenges for them to face? Then this is the class for you! Come learn the basics of programming. Learn to create simple 2D models and import them into the game engine to create your own video game.

PHOTOSHOP
Given how ubiquitous computers are these days, every artist has to have a mastery of digital graphics. But many artists have gone a step beyond and found meaningful ways to incorporate digital techniques into their pieces to create fantastical realms. Students will have the opportunity to explore the wide variety of painting tools and create their own digital masterpiece by utilizing Adobe Photoshop.

MAKE YOUR OWN CD
This course will teach your student some of the skills needed to be the next
Big-Time Record Producer. Teachers will focus on both musical
development and technological understanding of recording equipment.
Students will combine their musical knowledge with their writing skills to
create a song or spoken word poem to record on a cd.

GOOGLE EXPLORATION
Yes, Google helps us to search the internet, but did you know you could use Google for a myriad of reasons? Learn how to create blogs with Blogger, edit and share photos with Picasa, build 3D models with Sketch Up, create a
notebook for your internet research, and travel the world with Google Earth. Stay on the forefront of new technology in this exciting class.

COMPUTER COMPOSER
In this hands-on class students will work on Sibelius’ new software, Groovy City Music. television commercials. Attention will be given to vocal techniques, reading skills, and improvisation techniques with the microphone. Students will be
introduced to different voice over styles, from narrations to character work. Class will culminate with students working together in teams to create a taped commercial.

THE ART OF THE STORYBOARD
Become the “eye of the camera” as you create your own PSA (Public Service Announcement) or commercial from start to finish. Visually interpret your
message through the making of a storyboard. Working individually or in groups, students will focus on developing the literal idea and visual
interpretation.

FROM THE STORY TO THE SCREEN
Students will work individually or in pairs to create their own five-page screenplay that will culminate in a reading-performance by professional actors. affect their world. Working as a team, students will identify key characters in a newscast, research stories, conduct interviews, write copy, and learn
effective reporting and on-camera presence.

WHAT ARE THEY TELLING US? A CRITICAL LOOK AT MEDIA
Students learn to critically view television and other forms of media as they begin to understand and identify the language associated with different forms of mass media. Working with a television professional, they will begin to
examine their ability to distinguish fact from fiction, analyze images and
critique role models.

Learn the art and technique of visual storytelling, and create the "real" story of your own school and community.

21. HISTORY & SOCIAL STUDIES

Film & Folklore/ The Movie Club

WORLD LEADERS
This workshop aims to educate students about civics, effective globalization,
communication and multilateral diplomacy. Students will research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate,
deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. Topics, such as peace, human rights, urbanization, poverty, women’s rights, health, and cleaner oceans will be researched and discussed.

HIP HISTORY- A WORLD PERSPECTIVE
Part of STAR GATE’s Global Child Project this innovative class takes students on a journey from the dawn of human existence through the revelations of the Renaissance. This hip world history class engages students with a global
approach to global history. From Egypt, India and China, to the middle ages in Africa and Europe, Mesoamerica and the Renaissance; students will rhyme, rap and mix their way through this World History class.

NAVIGATING YOUR DREAM TRIP
In this Global challenge students become their own travel agent as they
create their dream tour. Through computer research, each student will define and map out the specific areas they will travel. They will create a budget, pick flights and times, research inter- city transportation, lodging options,
investigate cultural attractions, and a power point demonstration to share with the class.

READERS’ HISTORICAL THEATRE
Students will choose from a variety of historical characters, research and write a biographical essay on their character and participate in a mystery-driven
scenario that creates a historical period piece. (Class can be adapted to meet state standards in history or social studies for a particular grade.)

hieroglyphics. This class is an immersion program into the rich and ancient
culture of Egypt.

FILM AND FOLKLORE / THE MOVIE CLUB
Myth is a universal story. Struggles play out over and over again. We hear the echoes of ancient myths in our modern day soap operas, in commercials and in sitcoms. Students will explore the most ancient stories known and then look for the connections to current stories in film and TV.

MUSIC: THE LAST 50 YEARS
Music has the power to evoke some of our deepest feelings of love and anger. But how much of our reactions are universal and how much of them are based on our experiences as individuals? Let’s talk about music! Students will listen to examples of different musical styles and describe the reactions that each piece evokes. From early blues and jazz, rock n’ roll to rap, this class will give an historical context to the last half-century’s explosion of musical invention

THE HISTORY OF HIP-HOP
In this class, hip-hop is the lens through which we can view Twentieth Century United States history. Class structures have been revolutionized, our economy has undergone serious transformation and technological innovations have been exploding onto the market at a blinding rate. Hip-hop music has reflected all of these changes in a format that is accessible to people of all ages.
Topics will include social theory, jazz, break-dancing, spoken word, history and much, much more!

FROM FABLE TO FAIRYTALE
We read them voraciously as children, we watch them brought to life on the
silver screen, but what are these fables trying to teach us? This is a class that inspires the “Unanswered Questions”. Students will read and critique classic fairy tales, discover things that the characters value most intensely, fear most deeply and hope for most ardently. Students will write and discuss what they think is true, fair, good and beautiful, and create – alone or in teams - their own inspired fairytale. A modern spin on a classic idea!

PSYCH!
Perhaps the only frontiers that remain unexplored are those within our own heads. Psychology, psychiatry, neurology – what do we really know about the human mind, spirit and soul? Students will begin to grapple with some of the fundamental topics of psychology. What is the nature of a human personality? Is behavior learned or based in genetics? What’s your learning style? Students will gain clues to the artists’ creativity while learning about the times and places in which they lived.

22. MATHEMATICS AND CRITICAL THINKING

CHESS
It's not about Kings, Queens, and Rooks, but rather, quadrants and
coordinates, thinking strategically and foreseeing consequences. It's about lines and angles, weighing options and making decisions. Chess might just be the perfect teaching and learning tool, increasing higher level thinking skills,
advance math and reading skills, and building self-confidence.

MONEY WIZARD
Young people live in an age when the world of finance is an integral part of everyone’s daily life. In this course, students will learn how money, credit and the stock market really work. Topics will include checks, credit cards, investing and collateral.

ZOME TOOL!
