Welcome to the STAR Nova I! STAR invites ALL students to enroll in STAR classes that are taught by experienced instructors who are specialists in their field.

HOW TO REGISTER
1. Completely fill out the registration form.
2. Attach your check, made payable to STAR Education. Make sure your child’s name is on the check.
3. Please return your completed forms and check to room 7, Registration begins November 9, 2009.
4. NO PHONE CALLS will be made to let you know you are enrolled, unless classes are canceled or full.

REGISTRATION FEE
A $10.00 fee is required for each student per session to cover insurance and registration costs. This fee is non-refundable and is not applicable toward the cost of the classes.

Students currently enrolled in the STAR Afterschool Program do not pay the $10 registration fee.

Getting to your STAR classes
1st-5th Grade: Students report to outdoor cafeteria tables.

Kindergartners: STAR will pick up kindergartners from their classrooms and walk them to their classes

For information about school closures and minimum days see your STAR director.

After STAR Classes
Children not picked up at the end of class: 1st- 5th grade are released to the yard. Kinders will remain in STAR and late fees will apply.

Please contact your STAR Director if your child will be absent from STAR at 310-736-8575

Refund Policy
1. No refunds of any kind will be given after the first week of attendance.
2. We reserve the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Should such an event occur your money will be credited.
3. Tuition will not be refunded if your child misses a class, quits, or is asked to leave due to disruptive behavior.

Scholarships are available based on need. Please inquire for more information.

Be a Yoga STAR! Wake up your senses! Come take Yoga with one of STAR’s master Yoga Instructors. Through fun games you will develop agility, balance, self control, and confidence, while learning fun animal poses such as cobra, crane and downward dog. Oh yeah, and don’t forget we end every class with a secret chocolate-tasting surprise!

Our instructors will give you the tools to jump start your way to the top!

IQ-GO! Math
In IQ-GO! Math, you’ll have the chance to work at your own pace and level, whatever that might be. With math games, logic puzzles and hands-on art projects, you’ll increase your math fluency and have fun, all in one class!

Improv for kids is an exciting new addition to Star Education! In this workshop, children are encouraged expand their creativity, confidence, performance and social skills, as they sharpen comedic timing, quick wits and instincts in a safe and nurturing environment. Through a series of theatre games and improv forms they will create memorable characters and scenarios as well as some original sketches! It all ends with The Improv Showcase using suggestions from your family and your friends in the audience! Sign up now!

Wake up your senses! Yoga like you’ve never seen! Enjoy the simple aesthetic of Yoga and then take it to the next level by turning it into a performance piece. In this class you will explore different yoga poses, discover breath, and cultivate strength and flexibility. From there you will journey on to connect different poses with music into a rhythmic flow of yoga dance! It’s Easy Being Green

Mother Nature isn’t feeling well, but there are lots of simple ways to help cure her. Learn cool conservation techniques and groovy ways to Green your classroom, your kitchen, and your own backyard. Think globally and act locally without breaking a sweat, as you participate in a “Green Space” university experiment, compete in a solar powered robot contest and create a lady bug biome. Welcome to Woodworking
Grab yourself a hammer and handful of nails and get ready to wow friends and family with your wooden creations! This introduction to woodcrafting gives you the basic understanding of the skills and technique that go into making simple wooden works of art. By session’s end you will have created two wood projects, such as a wooden penguin or coin bank that will be sure to impress your parents when they join us for a final class wood show. You’ll also get to put on your instructor’s hat and teach your family a thing or two about the wonderful world of wood!

Love to work with wood? Already know your way a little bit around the woodshop? This is your chance to vastly expand your knowledge of the woodworking world. In this brand-new class you’ll learn to make your own small scale Geo Dome, and then construct larger versions as part of a team. On the last day of class, we’ll construct a full sized version, and invite parents inside to see what we’ve created!

World Drumming Ensemble

Drums come from different places all over the world and can make all kinds of different sounds. Under the tutelage of master musician Paul Wassaba Ouattara as well as several others you’ll become familiar with international rhythms and form a syncopated drum ensemble that grooves to the beats of North America, South America, Africa, and beyond! When class concludes, parents can come in and learn from you all about the drum shapes and drumming styles of cultures from across the planet.

From a Pawn to a King

It’s never too early to start learning the Game of Kings. You’ll discover the basics of Chess, including movements, rules, and decision-making. Participate in fun activities like mini-matches and no-stress drills to improve your understanding of the game. By the end of the session you’ll be able to demonstrate to your parents your growing understanding of how this ancient game is played.

Warriors of Chess

Chuck your checkers and enter the world of chess! You alone can defend your little white and black men against attack! What strategy will you use? Hone your skill, master the game and win trophies in one of our many tournaments. Learn openings, mid game tactics and strategies as you improve your concentration along with your test-taking and problem-solving skills. Charge on toward checkmating the King in the final class as your parents watch you go toe-to-toe with your fellow players in a chess battle royale!

This class is for experienced chess players only. Take your already strong game to the next level. We’ll explore more chess concepts like decoys, deception, and devious new openings. If you build it, it will be fun! Using the world famous Lego Education system, you’ll learn how to construct dwellings and simple machines, and find out what makes them work and holds them together. You’ll build your problem-solving skills as you let your imagination run wild. Each session we work on brand-new projects, so even if you’ve taken a Lego class before, this one will offer you totally fresh opportunities to explore the world of Lego! By the end of session you’ll be able to show your parents your newfound Lego skills when they visit class to check out your creations.

Build, make, create! Take it apart and do it again. Get your hands working and your mind turning. With the world famous Lego Education System you’ll be able to construct simple machines and mechanisms, learning how they function and why. Work your way up from junior builder on levers and gears to a master builder using motors and wheels. Indulge your artistic side while learning the logic and reasoning skills you’ll need to hold your creations together. We change our Lego projects each session, so feel free to take this exciting class again and again. Each session ends with you becoming the “instructor”, explaining how you built your creations when your parents come to visit class.

Ever wondered what it would be like to play with Wall-E or R2D2? You can build a robot of your very own! Using the world famous Lego system your Lego Robotics Specialist will guide you through varied projects from simple to complex, such as constructing a self-propelled see-saw or motorized dog. Each week you’ll tackle a fun, challenging new robotics project. By the end of the session you’ll be able to explain the basics of robot-building to your parents, who can come in to admire your new Lego friends!

Even you littlest rockers can make some big, beautiful noise! RockSTAR Music Education, the program that turns children’s Rock n' Roll dreams into reality, is proud to be offering a Kinder RockSTAR class just for you! Previously offered exclusively to 1st grade and up, this class will put you on the fast track toward learning the fundamentals of rock. KINDERROCK presents the music in a fun, easy-to-learn format, incorporating basic rhythm, melody, listening, and teamwork activities. This class will prepare you for the RockSTAR classes to follow, giving you the extra preparation needed to truly rock!
Important Note: Students enrolled in KINDERROCK will not be participating in the Battle of the Bands!

Introduction to Modern Music Technology (I.M.M.T)
1st-5th
Slide on into the studio and discover the world of modern musical production and recording. Employing the user friendly MacBook Pro, you’ll become the producer, using the programs Garage Band (for older students) or Groovy City (for younger age groups) to record hard-rocking jams. Experiment with the latest in digital light and touch sensitive synthesizers and samplers in a fusion of technology and music that will give you an understanding of how the tunes we hear every day are actually created! Move behind the mixing board and make some sweet, sweet music!

Work on drills to reinforce the basics and stress more complex maneuvers like overheads and topspin. Gotta dance? Learn the vocabulary and fundamental elements of dance technique as you flex your creative muscles to choreograph original performance pieces. While exploring and combining locomotor and axial movements, you’ll work in groups to discover how sequencing, levels and quality of movement can be combined in different ways to create their own choreography. Bicycle Maintenance

Grab some tools and become a real bicycle mechanic! Each week, one student will bring his/her bicycle to class and you’ll then work together to give the bicycle a complete overhaul! The tune-up will include seat and handlebar adjustments, chain lubing, brake adjustments, flat repair and handlebar wrap changing. Find out how to do it yourself, and you just might never need to take your bike into the shop again!
