Get ready to work with wood and create, create, create! Once you’ve mastered how to sand wood, you’ll develop a familiarity with hammering nails in a safe and creative way. Make a cool off-road vehicle, a unique treasure box or a wall shelf. Build your own wooden masterpiece to show off at "Family Day", the last day of class when you’ll demonstrate the techniques you’ve learned while becoming a STAR Woodworker! Maximum 12 students.

Get to know the awesome animals of the STAR ECO Station, our exotic wildlife rescue center! Boogie down with bodacious boas, crawl along with creepy critters, marvel at magnificent parrots and befriend all sorts of other ECO animals when they pay an exciting, educational visit to your class. Make toys for the animals to play with, collect ECO animal trading cards, and have the animal adventure of your life!

Soccer – Kick It!

Slap on some shin pads and get in the game! Get a great workout and find out the fundamentals of offense and defense. Increase your understanding of basic soccer moves such as passing, dribbling, shooting and goal keeping as you develop your appreciation of teamwork and sportsmanship. Show Mom and Dad who’s the new soccer boss at our last class, when we’ll host a “grown-ups vs. kids” showdown!

Welcome to the Edison STAR Nova (Enrichment) Program! STAR invites ALL students to enroll in STAR classes that are taught by experienced instructors who are specialists in their field.

COMO REGISTRARSE

1. Complete en su totalidad el formulario de registro.
2. Adjunte su cheque ( NO CASH ) a la orden de Edison STAR. Asegurese que el nombre del niño este escrito en el cheque.

HOW TO REGISTER

Kindergartners:

Kindergartners will be dropped off at the amphitheater after school dismissal by their kindergarten teachers on their designated STAR class day. There, they will check-in with the STAR Director and meet their STAR teacher who will then walk students to their STAR classrooms.

Ahora veremos algunos de nuestros corales rescatados. Mucha gente no sabe que los corales son animales y no plantas o rocas. Ellos actuan como los pulmones del aceano y ayudan a limpiar el oceano filtrando pequeñísimas particulas.(como cuando nosotros respiramos profundamente nuestros pulmones filtran el aire que respiramos)(ask the tour to take a breath). Esto es lo que los corales hacen en el oceano. Estos corales fueron arrancados del acantilado donde vivian e ingresados al pais en forma ilegal. Los corales solo crecen a raiz de 1centímetro o 1/4 de pulgada cada año lo que hace dificil su curación. Si ustedes tienen corales del acantilado en sus peceras por favor compre solo corales crecidos en tankes o use réplicas de corales como los De-Coral. (There are examples in the big center tank.). Now let’s take a look at some of our rescued coral. Many people don’t know that coral is actually an animal and not a rock or a plant. They act as the ocean’s lungs and filter out tiny particles to help clean the ocean, (When we take a deep breath our lungs filter the air we breathe (ask the tour to take a breath). This is what coral does in the ocean). These corals were broken off their reef home and smuggled to the U.S. illegally. Corals only grow about 1cm or 1/4 inch every year making recovery very difficult. If you have a coral reef tank, please buy only cultured corals (raised in tanks) or use the replicas like De-Coral. (There are examples in the big center tank.) Coral reefs of the world are in danger of disappearing for this and many other reasons including bleaching because of rising ocean temperatures caused by global warming.

Here we are in the ocean and we observe life in the sea including some of FLO’s predators, endangered Sea lions and Otters, as well as her friends, a Whale and the Sea Turtles (now that she’s big enough not to be eaten by them). All of the creatures of the sea need our help to protect them from unsafe fishing practices like drift nets and bottom trawling. The choices we make when purchasing seafood affect the ocean food web and it is up to us to make responsible choices.

They also monitor the tuna industry to ensure dolphin safe practices within this industry.

She runs into three choices: A Concrete River that’s too warm and that runs too fast and has no place to rest like Ballona Creek; A Dam with No Fish Ladder so she can’t pass through and finally FLO finds a Dam with a Fish Ladder and gets to the back to the fresh water. She’s excited because she’ll be able to go back to the ocean later… she can transition three times. Salmon and other anadromous fish were in big trouble and still are in some places because they were unable to return home to spawn. Many advances in technology have been made to accommodate the needs of wildlife while continuing to provide for people.

This model shows the difference between a sewer and a storm drain. The wastewater from our homes and businesses goes down the drain to the sewer and is pumped to the sewage treatment plant to be cleaned. The storm drains go directly to the ocean and there is no filter so any trash or pollution like you see here ends up at our beaches. There is no pump so the flow of rainwater may be blocked by trash clogging the pipes. Then the streets can become flooded. Santa Monica is the first city in the country to implement what they call the SMURFF. It is a cleaning system for storm drain run-off. Instead of going into the ocean, the water is diverted into the SMURFF to be cleaned and is then used to water plants and flush toilets at the beach.
This is what a storm drain may look like at the beach. (Point to the pipe coming out of the wall) You should never swim or play within 100 yards (1 football field) of any storm drain. It is very dirty and can bring germs from the rest of the city that could make you sick.

           We are now going to take swim though the Kelp Forest; set up by the Santa Monica BayKeepers. This is what it’s like in the ocean here in CA. Kelp forests are disappearing at a remarkably high rate. This is a problem because they are the rainforest of the ocean. They provide shelter and hiding places for over 800 species of animals. It is an important lesson to learn about the ecosystem’s circle of life. When we take away one component, it disturbs the balance of everything else.

Does anyone like ice cream? Do you brush your teeth? Do you wash your hair? You do. Then you like giant kelp and you didn’t even know. Kelp provides us with a lot of the products we use everyday, such as: toothpaste, ice cream, shampoo, make-up, some detergents, and more. So it’s not just important to the animals, we use kelp too.

Prepare yourself for a Walk on the Wild Side. In what we, at the ECO STATION, consider to the most important room in the entire building. How many kids have seen 101 or 102 Dalmatians, or The Wild Thornberrys? The people stealing the animals for their skin are poachers. If we want to end this trade of wild animals and animal products, we can simply stop supporting it financially by not buying these products. Fish and Wildlife has donated this display to teach the public about endangered species and what we can do to help save them. An endangered species is a plant or an animal that there is less than 3000 left in the world. This sounds like a terrible thing. It actually is a good thing because at least there is hope to save them. When the last individual of an endangered species dies that plant or animal becomes extinct. By the time we finish our tour, 6 endangered species will have become extinct. This rate of extinction is more than when the dinosaurs disappeared. In this display, (the old chest) we get to see an example of how smugglers sneak animals into the country. It is easy to understand why so few animals survive the journey to America. Do we need food, water and air to survive? Do animals need this as well? What would happen if we didn’t get these things, (the kids then answer that we would die. Then you get the opportunity to explain that the animals do too). 50% of animals smuggled in illegally die. When birds are smuggled in illegally, 80% do not make it to America. The smugglers make a lot of money selling the surviving animals. It is worth it to them. It is very important that we learn not to buy wild caught animals as pets. Captive bred means born in the U.S. or born as pets. Also we shouldn’t buy endangered species products. THE MORE WE BUY, THE MORE THEY DIE. (Show the alternative products.) If we want to look like animals, we can. We can make our clothes look like anything we want without taking the skins or furs of animals.

Aprende lo fundamental del skateboarding, su historia,  sanidad y seguridad, y la importancia de las reglas de cortesía de los parkes. Los principiantes trabajarán con los pies en postura de correr, empujando, doblando y quebrando mientras que los más avanzados perfeccionarán sus maniobras en la rampa,  saltos, manuales, reversas,  y mucho más! ECO STATION SCRIPT Part III

En este lugar, tenemos varias pequeñas red ear slider ( tortuguitas con orejas de color rojas). Estas tortugas son las mascotas mas comunes entre las tortugas y ya se han esparcido por todo el mundo entre los comerciantes de mascotas. Estas tortugas pueden contener salmonela y pueden facilmente caber en la boca de un niño pequeño. Todos los reptiles pueden tener salmonela, y esta es la razón del porque todos debemos  lavarnos las manos después de haber tocado un animal en el día de hoy.         Over here, we have many small red ear sliders. Red-ear sliders are the most common pet turtle and have spread worldwide through the pet trade. When they are less than four inches, it is illegal to sell them. They can carry salmonella and at this small size could easily fit in the mouth of a small child. All reptiles can carry salmonella; this is why everyone will wash their hands after we touch the animals today.
Siganme, vamos a entrar en la civilizació Maya. Muchas cosas en el Eco Station han sido recyclados. Este hermoso árbol a sido construido de tubos conductores de aire acondicionado y conductores eléctricos (los tubos que mantienen los cables juntos). Antes de tirar las cosas considere si pueden ser útiles para otra cosa. Al pasar por los salones, puede que sientan un poco de humedad y algo gelatinoso en las paredes. Esto ocurre porque cuando los templos Mayas fueron encontrados, ellos han sido totalmente cubiertos por los bosques. Al no haber gente viviendo allí, la selva toma su lugar. Los bosques son húmedos, calurosos y llueve casi todos los días. Las paredes de los templos están cubiertos de humedad, lodo y vizcosidades lo que hace un lugar feltil para que las plantas puedan crecer en ellas.          Follow me as we enter a lost Mayan civilization. Many things at the Eco Station were recycled. These beautiful trees were made out of air conditioning ducts and electrical conduits (tubes that hold wires together). Before you throw things away, see if you can turn it into something else. As we walk through the halls, you can actually feel moss & slime on them. This is because when the Mayan temples were discovered, they had been swallowed up by the rainforest. People didn’t live in there anymore and the jungle took over. In the rainforest, it is hot, humid and rains almost everyday. The walls of the temples are wet and slimy so plants can grow on them.

In this room we like to celebrate the world’s diversity. We invite artists from around the world and locally to come and share their art with the public. Los peces en este tanque són del río Amazonas. Es uno de los ríos más largo del mundo y por esta razón existe una gran variedad de peces que viven aquí. El pez más largo de aqui es llamado "Pacú", un pariente de la "piranha". Ellos fueron comprados en una tienda de mascotas cuando tenían solo 2 -3 pulgadas de largo. Muy pronto crecieron y siguen creciendo. Se calcula que un día podrían llegar a pesar uno 25 kilos (55 libras) y vivir por casi 30 años. Estos peces son también llamados "quebradores de tanques" por su tamaño y fuerza suficientes par quebrar un acuario. La gente de la zona del Amazonas y sus alrededores (Brasil, Norte de Argentina, Paraguay..etc) comen estos peces como nosotros la tuna o el salmón. Tendrían ustedes una tuna como mascota? Verdad que no! entonces no compren pacu.  Los peces Oscar y los peces loros son tambien del area del Amazonas y pueden ser muy agresivos contra los otros peces más dóciles. Aún si quieren una pez pequeño como mascota, primero hagan algunas averiguaciones para estar seguros que clase de pez están llevando a su casa.        The fish in this tank are from the Amazon River. It is one of the largest rivers in the world so there are very large fish that live in it. The largest fish here are called Pacu, a relative of the piranha. They were purchased at pet stores when they were only 2-3 inches long. Soon though they grow up and keep growing. One day, they may be up to 25kg/ 55 lbs. and live for almost 30 years. These fish are called “tank busters” because they grow large and strong enough to break the aquarium. People of the Amazon regions, Brazil etc., eat these fish just like we eat tuna or salmon. Would you ever have a tuna for a pet? No, so don’t buy a pacu. Oscars and parrotfish are also from the Amazon area and can be very aggressive towards other more docile fish. Even if you want a small fish as your pet, do some research first to make sure you know what is going home with you.
A nuestra izquierda tenemos ilustrado  un habitat de un río, algo asi como un ecosistema de un río. Esta es FLO. Ella es una trucha "cabeza de plata".. verdaderamente un pez muy preciado. El NOAA ( la Administración Nacional de Oceanos y atmósfera) le ha creado un hábitat para ayudar a la gente a conocer acerca de nuestros anadromous peces  locales. Ellos nacen en rios muy frios o arroyos pero cuando crecen, se adaptan para pasar de agua dulce a agua salada para reproducirce y volver a los rios de agua dulce.  Ellos hacen esto 3 veces. Más tarde volveremos con FLO de nuevo.
Esta es una tortuga mordedora. Es ilegal poseer una de ellas como mascota en California. Ellas no son nativas de una región particular (naturalmente se las puede encontrar en California) y en concecuencia, causarán problemas a la vida silvestre del lugar donde han sidos liberadas. Por favor, nunca libere mascotas en la vida salvaje! Ellos pueden no sobrevivir, y si lo hacen, causarían un gran daño a la vida silvestre del lugar.      To our left, we have illustrated a Riparian Habitat or River environment. This is FLO. She is a Steelhead Trout… a really cool fish. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) created her to help people learn about our local anadromous fish. They are born in a cool rivers or streams but as they grow they adapt to go from fresh water to salt water to breed and back to fresh water. They can do this 3 times. We’ll see Flo again soon.

This is a snapping turtle. They are illegal to keep as pets in California. They are not indigenous (naturally found in CA) so they would cause problems for native wildlife if they were released. Please Never release pets into the wild! They may not survive but if they do they can harm the local wildlife.

Este es Cutter, una tortuga de caparazón blanda.  El era una tortuga perdida. Dos niñas lo encontraron caminando en la Slauson. Ellos son de caparazón blando y  no tienen la protección  den una caparazón dura, por consiguiente pasan la mayor parte de su tiempo escondidos en el barro o bajo las piedras. Debido a que tienen el cuello largo, pueden salir a la superficie y respirar.  En este tanque tenemos las tortugas de oreja colorada  y las de espalda de diamantes de agua dulce.  Estas tortugas de agua dulce son de la familia de las tortugas pero pero tambien pueden tolerar lo salobre o agua salada. Muchas de las especies de tortuga pueden vivir hasta 40 ños. Algo que tendrían que pensar si se deciden a comprar una. Estas tortugas pueden crecer hasta un pie de diámetro. Estas están disponibles para la adopción. Si uste ve que alguien tiene un charco o un estanque de agua, preguntenle si quisieran adoptar una o dos.  Ahora FLO se ha transformado en un pequeño salmón y viajado en contra de la corriente hacia los estuarios o areas ricas en plantas o insectos mientras nada cerca del oceano el agua se hace más y más salada. Se mantiene en el agua mezcla de salado y dulce hasta que se acostumbre a la vida en el oceano.             This is Cutter, the soft-shell turtle. He was a stray turtle. Two girls found him walking down Slauson. Soft-shell turtles lack the protection of a hard shell so they spend much of their time hiding in the mud or gravel. They can reach to the surface to breathe with their long necks.

In this tank, there are red ear sliders and a diamondback terrapin. Terrapin are in the turtle family but they can tolerate brackish or salty water. Many turtle species live for more than 40 years, something to think about before you buy one. They will also grow to be about 1 foot in diameter. These are available for adoption. If you know someone with a pond, ask them if they would like to rescue a turtle or two.

Now Flo has grown into a SMOLT and she has traveled down the river backward towards the estuary or wetlands as she swims closer to the ocean the water becomes more and more salty. She stays in the brackish water for a while, getting ready for her life in the ocean.

Alguno de ustedes vio Buscando a Nemo? (Finding Nemo?) Este pez fue robado del oceano como Nemo. Algunas personas de regreso a casa de las vacaciones ponen peces en bolsitas de plástico y despues en portafolios y carteras. Algunos otros lo mezclan con cianuro diluido para que les sea más fácil atraparlos. El cianuro es un veneno que cuando lo sueltan en el oceano se esparse  entre todos los animales y matan los corales y las plantas sencitivas que son los que hacen el medio donde viven los peces. Hoy, algunas especies de peces de los alcantilados son crecidos en tanques. Esta es la mejor opción. La gente necesita estar segura que los peces que compran son aquellos crecidos en cautiverios y no los que han sido atrapados usando cianuro. Compre peces captivos. No compre souvenir o recuerdos hecho de animales. No colecte productos de animales como conchas de mar, mariposas, etc.  Cuanto más compre estos productos más peces van a ser robados del oceano para sus usos decorativos. Ropas o productos magnéticos son una mejor opción.  Have any of you seen Finding Nemo? These fish were stolen from the ocean just like Nemo. Some people coming home from vacation abroad put fish in plastic bags that later go in brief cases and purses. Sometimes people use diluted cyanide to stun the fish and make them easier to catch. Cyanide is a poison, so when it is released in the ocean it spreads around to all the animals and kills the sensitive corals and plants that make homes for the fish. Today, some species of reef fishes are tank-raised. This is the best choice. People need to make sure if they are buying marine fish that the store knows you do not want them to buy fish caught using cyanide. Buy captive bred fish.

Do not buy souvenirs made from animals. Do not collect animal products such as seashells, butterflies, etc. When you buy a puffer-fish lamp or even these seashells, people will go steal more of them from the ocean to make decorations. T-shirts and magnets etc. are a better choice.

ECO STATION SCRIPT Part II

Antes de comenzar nuestro paseo, es muy importante que primero conozcan algunas de las reglas a respetar. Primero, cada uno debe permanecer en el grupo por todo el tiempo que dure el recorrido. Por favor hácerme saber si alguien, si por alguna razóm,  necesita dejar el grupo. Por favor apaguen todos los celulares o pongalos en silencio. Las llamadas pueden asustar a los animales. No metan los dedos dentro de las jaulas, porque esto puede enojar a los animales y por consiguiente morderlos. No tratar de llamar la atensión de los animales golpeando en los cristatles del acuario o las jaulas, porque esto puede asustar a los animales.  Más adelante, todos tendrán la oportunidad de tocar los animales. Por favor, no tocar la cabeza o la cara de los animales. También recuerden de no poner sus dedos en  su boca, su  ojos, o su nariz después de haber tocado los animales. Todos los animales tienen gérmenes. Usaremos jel anti-bactriales  y también lavaremos nuestras manos al final del recorrido.
Usted está mirando la pared de los donantes ahora. Sin la ayuda de estas familias y compañía, no hubiera sido posible la construcción de este centro. Si usted realmente nos quiere y ama a los animales ppor favor considere la compra de algun ladrillo o hacer una donación al final de su visita para ayudarnos a continuar con nuestra misión. También aceptamos donaciones en forma de comidas para los animales, toallas de papel, etc.
Las pajareras de afuera son muy bién conocidas como el campamento de pájaros. Los pájaros son rotados cuando los días son más cálidos para que todos nuestros pájaros tengan la oportunidad de disfrutar de un día al aire libre y aire fresco y soleado.
Más de cuarenta diseñadores de Hollywood y otros artistas que hacen la magia de las películas han hecho que este lugar se vea increible. Ellos donaron us tiempo por 8 semanas para hacer que el ECO Station se viera como si  realmente estamos entrando a un bosque tropical.   Before we begin the tour, I must go over some very important rules. First, everyone must stay with the group at all times. If for any reason you need to leave the tour, please let me know. Please turn off all cell phones or put them on silent mode. The rings could frighten the animals. Do not put your fingers or anything else inside the cages as the animals can & do bite. Do not tap, bang or knock on the aquariums or cages. This will scare the animals. We will have the opportunity to touch some animals today. Please do not touch the head or the face of the animal. Also do not put your fingers in your mouth, eyes, or nose after touching the animals. All animals have germs. We will use anti-bacterial gel as well as wash our hands after the tour.

You are now looking at the donor walls. Without these families and companies, we would not have been able to build this facility. If you love us and the animals at the end of your tour, you might consider purchasing a brick or making a donation at the end of the tour to help us continue or mission. We also accept donations such as food for the animals, paper towels, etc. The outside aviaries are fondly known as our day camp for birds! We rotate the birds when it is warm enough so that all of our birds get some quality time out in the fresh air and sunshine.

Over forty Hollywood set designers and other artists that make movie magic made this place look so incredible. They donated their time for 8 weeks to make the Eco Station look like we are actually going into the rainforest.
