Este hermoso árbol a sido construido de tubos conductores de aire acondicionado y conductores eléctricos (los tubos que mantienen los cables juntos). Antes de tirar las cosas considere si pueden ser útiles para otra cosa. Al pasar por los salones, puede que sientan un poco de humedad y algo gelatinoso en las paredes. Esto ocurre porque cuando los templos Mayas fueron encontrados, ellos han sido totalmente cubiertos por los bosques. Al no haber gente viviendo allí, la selva toma su lugar. Los bosques son húmedos, calurosos y llueve casi todos los días. Las paredes de los templos están cubiertos de humedad, lodo y vizcosidades lo que hace un lugar feltil para que las plantas puedan crecer en ellas. Follow me as we enter a lost Mayan civilization. This is because when the Mayan temples were discovered, they had been swallowed up by the rainforest. People didn’t live in there anymore and the jungle took over. In the rainforest, it is hot, humid and rains almost everyday. The walls of the temples are wet and slimy so plants can grow on them.

Los peces en este tanque són del río Amazonas. Es uno de los ríos más largo del mundo y por esta razón existe una gran variedad de peces que viven aquí. El pez más largo de aqui es llamado "Pacú", un pariente de la "piranha". Ellos fueron comprados en una tienda de mascotas cuando tenían solo 2 -3 pulgadas de largo. Muy pronto crecieron y siguen creciendo. Se calcula que un día podrían llegar a pesar uno 25 kilos (55 libras) y vivir por casi 30 años. It is one of the largest rivers in the world so there are very large fish that live in it. The largest fish here are called Pacu, a relative of the piranha. They were purchased at pet stores when they were only 2-3 inches long. Soon though they grow up and keep growing. One day, they may be up to 25kg/ 55 lbs. and live for almost 30 years. These fish are called “tank busters” because they grow large and strong enough to break the aquarium. People of the Amazon regions, Brazil etc., eat these fish just like we eat tuna or salmon. Would you ever have a tuna for a pet? No, so don’t buy a pacu. Oscars and parrotfish are also from the Amazon area and can be very aggressive towards other more docile fish. To our left, we have illustrated a Riparian Habitat or River environment. This is FLO. She is a Steelhead Trout… a really cool fish. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) created her to help people learn about our local anadromous fish. They are born in a cool rivers or streams but as they grow they adapt to go from fresh water to salt water to breed and back to fresh water. They can do this 3 times. We’ll see Flo again soon.
This is a snapping turtle. They are illegal to keep as pets in California. They are not indigenous (naturally found in CA) so they would cause problems for native wildlife if they were released. Please Never release pets into the wild! They may not survive but if they do they can harm the local wildlife.
Este es Cutter, una tortuga de caparazón blanda. El era una tortuga perdida. Dos niñas lo encontraron caminando en la Slauson. Ellos son de caparazón blando y no tienen la protección den una caparazón dura, por consiguiente pasan la mayor parte de su tiempo escondidos en el barro o bajo las piedras. Estas tortugas de agua dulce son de la familia de las tortugas pero pero tambien pueden tolerar lo salobre o agua salada. Muchas de las especies de tortuga pueden vivir hasta 40 ños. Algo que tendrían que pensar si se deciden a comprar una. Estas tortugas pueden crecer hasta un pie de diámetro. Estas están disponibles para la adopción. Si uste ve que alguien tiene un charco o un estanque de agua, preguntenle si quisieran adoptar una o dos. Ahora FLO se ha transformado en un pequeño salmón y viajado en contra de la corriente hacia los estuarios o areas ricas en plantas o insectos mientras nada cerca del oceano el agua se hace más y más salada. Se mantiene en el agua mezcla de salado y dulce hasta que se acostumbre a la vida en el oceano. This is Cutter, the soft-shell turtle. He was a stray turtle. Two girls found him walking down Slauson. Soft-shell turtles lack the protection of a hard shell so they spend much of their time hiding in the mud or gravel. They can reach to the surface to breathe with their long necks.In this tank, there are red ear sliders and a diamondback terrapin. Terrapin are in the turtle family but they can tolerate brackish or salty water. Many turtle species live for more than 40 years, something to think about before you buy one. They will also grow to be about 1 foot in diameter. These are available for adoption. If you know someone with a pond, ask them if they would like to rescue a turtle or two.
Now Flo has grown into a SMOLT and she has traveled down the river backward towards the estuary or wetlands as she swims closer to the ocean the water becomes more and more salty. She stays in the brackish water for a while, getting ready for her life in the ocean.
Alguno de ustedes vio Buscando a Nemo? (Finding Nemo?) Este pez fue robado del oceano como Nemo. Algunas personas de regreso a casa de las vacaciones ponen peces en bolsitas de plástico y despues en portafolios y carteras. Algunos otros lo mezclan con cianuro diluido para que les sea más fácil atraparlos. El cianuro es un veneno que cuando lo sueltan en el oceano se esparse entre todos los animales y matan los corales y las plantas sencitivas que son los que hacen el medio donde viven los peces. Hoy, algunas especies de peces de los alcantilados son crecidos en tanques. Esta es la mejor opción. La gente necesita estar segura que los peces que compran son aquellos crecidos en cautiverios y no los que han sido atrapados usando cianuro. Compre peces captivos. No compre souvenir o recuerdos hecho de animales. Cyanide is a poison, so when it is released in the ocean it spreads around to all the animals and kills the sensitive corals and plants that make homes for the fish. Today, some species of reef fishes are tank-raised. This is the best choice. People need to make sure if they are buying marine fish that the store knows you do not want them to buy fish caught using cyanide. Buy captive bred fish. Do not buy souvenirs made from animals. Do not collect animal products such as seashells, butterflies, etc. When you buy a puffer-fish lamp or even these seashells, people will go steal more of them from the ocean to make decorations. T-shirts and magnets etc. are a better choice.
